I think the best way Australia can honour Gough Whitlam is to protect his legacy. Defend Medicare. Fight against university fee deregulation. Support needs-based school funding. Resist laws that restrict abortion or women’s rights. Save Medibank. Block drilling on the Great Barrier Reef. The list goes on. Today is a very sad day indeed.

If she’d had any idea at all that she’d end up spending New Year’s Eve in jail instead of at a rooftop party in Manhattan, she would’ve stopped herself from getting that fight. Or at least done a better job of running from the cops — or maybe she could’ve just not teased them about the powdered sugar on their uniforms. But it was so cliche, she thought. She simply couldn’t resist. Never could — always was her problem.
